The Michael Moore movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Actor Tony Randall died in New York at age 84.

Los Angeles Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa (vee-yah-ry-GOH'-sah) unseated Mayor James Hahn to be elected the city's first Hispanic mayor in more than a century. Impressionist and actor Frank Gorshin died in Burbank, Calif., at age 72.

Five years ago: The Supreme Court ruled, 5-4, that young people serving life prison terms should have "a meaningful opportunity to obtain release" provided they didn't kill their victims. Laura Silsby, the last of 10 Americans detained while trying to take 33 children out of Haiti after the Jan. 2010 earthquake, was freed after a judge sentenced her to time already served in jail.

On May 17, 1943, the Memphis Belle became the first B-17 to complete 25 missions in World War II, securing the plane and crew's reputations as rock stars. The plane was the subject of a documentary at the time and a film about the crew was made in 1990 starring Matthew Modine, Eric Stoltz and Harry Connick Jr.. Ten days after the 25th mission, the pilot, Capt. Robert K. Morgan and co-pilot, Capt. James Verinis, met the king and queen of England, to whom Morgan explained the origin of the plane's name.

On May 17, 1954, a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court handed down its Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision which held that racially segregated public schools were inherently unequal, and therefore unconstitutional.
