Chapter One
Recruitment

Dantooine

She used to feel comfortable at the Jedi Enclave; nothing was more calming to her then walking the grounds of the enclave, listening to the Jedi Masters like Master Vandar, but now there was heaviness in the air. Tensions were high as everyone waited for the latest news about the war, it had been going on for years and several Jedi, including herself had been involved up until the Jedi Council had declared the Jedi Order neutral, but now the war was going badly and some Jedi and the Republic were both pushing the Jedi Council to get involved. Every day it seemed reports of another planet falling to the Mandalorians came in or a city had been leveled, she had seen first hand what the enemy was willing to do. She could still see the burning remains of the Stereb cities on the planet Serroco in her dreams; The Neo-Crusaders under Cassus Fett had set off several nuclear devices as the two sides battled wiping out whole cities, turning many of them into nothing more then glass craters, and killing millions, including their own forces. She had been scouting a head of the Republic forces when the explosions took place and would have been killed had it not been for a timely Military transport that had been leaving at the time. It was soon after the devastating loss at Dagary Minor that she was recalled along with other Jedi but she couldn’t let the war go. The Council was committing treason as far as she was concerned by turning their back on the Republic and there was little she could do, she was no Revan.

Revan had been traveling the Republic almost as soon as the Mandalorians invaded the Republic some two years earlier, when the Neo-Crusaders had attacked the Zabrak Colonies in the Outer rim, to raise support from fellow Jedi. He had recently led a group of his followers to the planet Cathar and learned the horrible truth of what had happened there. Early in the war the Mandalorians, looking for a challenge and knowing how formable the Cathar were, attacked the world and nearly wiped out the entire population, if not for colonies a whole species could have been gone extinct. Now the Council gave Revan the go a head to recruit a few Jedi to help the Republic, but still remained neutral, claiming that they saw something behind the Mandalorians moves.

“Meetra,” a male voice called out from behind her, turning to look at who was approaching her she smiled as her old friend Alex Squinquargesimus walked up. She had not seen him in a long time as he had been off with Revan and had gained a bit of a reputation for his actions on Suurja, where he and his fellow followers of Revan had been captured by the Mandalorians and later returned to Coruscant with the Mandalorian Scientest Demagol as his prisoner.

“Squint,” Meetra greeted her friend by his nickname, which he had gained after a number of fellow padawans failed to say his full name. He had been a refuge from the earliest days of the Mandalorian War and with no where to go the Jedi took him as a Padawan, even though he was a few years older then their usual candidates, she had met him soon after when he was assigned to her youngling clan. Now he was a giant at over 2 meters tall and like her a seasoned veteran of the war.

“Well look at you,” Alex grabbed her in a bear hug lifting her up off the ground. “A Jedi Knight, congratulations.”

“Thank you Alex,” Meetra straightened her robes after being set back down. “What brings you back to the Enclave?”

“The Council has given us the okay to join the cause,” Alex smiled.

“I heard,” Meetra nodded silently, she had been giving serious thought about rejoining the Military despite Atris’ pleas to listen to the Jedi Council.

“I came to find you,” Alex quickly got to the point, revealing there was a motive to this reunion. “Revan wants you.”

“He wants me,” Meetra was surprised; she had never met the man and didn’t think he knew who she was.

“He heard about Dagary Minor,” she couldn’t hide the guilt that passed over her at the mention of the battle she had led. “Even though the Mandalorians won he was impressed with your tactics.”

“I have been thinking of going back,” Meetra confessed.

“If you want to go, we’re leaving at the end of the day,” Alex placed his large hands on her shoulders. “The main landing bay.”

Meetra watched him approach another group of padawans who had been gathering in the courtyard, she didn’t know any of them personally, though she recognized young Bastila Shan. Shan was a promising Padawan who had just been assigned to Master Nemo in an effort to teach her to not be so brash and impulsive. Many of the masters spoke about her abilities in Battle Meditation, saying they haven’t seen someone so young with such a powerful control of the rare force power. Meetra watched as Alex give his spiel about joining Revan to fight the Mandalorians being careful to watch Bastila, if she were to join her abilities would be a great help. Meetra didn’t believe she would join the cause though, she was pretty young and she was known to be loyal to the Jedi Council which meant she was likely to follow their lead. Alex’s speech went on for a few more minutes before Bastila started warning against joining the war effort, talking about the darkness that the council felt in the force and how they need to prepare for that and not the Mandalorians. In the end Bastila’s pleas must have worked as only a couple of the Jedi in the crowd decided to join Alex while the rest went back to their training. Taking a deep breath she continued her walk to towards living quarters where she was supposed to meet the new Jedi Master, Atris about a possible Padawan.

The Young Woman was seated on the floor with her legs crossed in a standard Meditation pose, her white hair was tied up in a bun at the back of her head and her White Jedi robes looked spotless. Atris looked every bit of the Ice Queen nickname she had earned as a result of her looks and personality. Just a few years older then her she had recently become the youngest member of the Jedi Council, despite her icy personality the two had been close friends in the days before the war and while they were still friends they weren’t as close anymore due to her choice to join the war effort near the start of the conflict.

“I know what you’re going to say,” Atris’ voice was cold, telling Meetra that Atris knew she had been recruited. “So why don’t you just say it.”

“I can’t just set here and wait, Atris,” Meetra sighed as the argument they had a year ago started to happen again. “Billions of lives are at stake.”

“So you choose to answer aggression with aggression,” Atris opened her eyes to look at her friend with those ice cold blue eyes.

“We’ve done it before,” Meetra looked down at her feet to avoid looking at Atris. She was always more mature, coming across as older then her age, something that made her feel like a child when Atris was upset with her.

“And it nearly split the order in half,” as the Jedi Historian, Atris knew all about Exar Kun’s war with the Jedi Order that had caused Jedi to turn on Jedi and even brother to turn on Brother.

“You know what they did to Cathar,” Meetra shot back. “They’ll do it again, they have to be stopped.”

“We don’t have the whole picture,” Atris had finally stood up to be face to face with Meetra. “There is something darker at work.”

“I feel it too,” Meetra took hold of her friend’s shoulders. “You need all the time you can get to figure out what is going on.”

“I don’t understand why you came to me,” Atris looked into Meetra’s blue eyes and smiled. “Will you at least take a Padawan with you; the council has several lined up for you.”

“It will be better if I don’t take one with me,” Meetra shook her head. “But I’ll be back, you can count on it.”

“You have better come back,” Atris took her friend and hugged her tight. She didn’t dare say it but she had a feeling deep in the back of her mind that this was Goodbye and that she would never see her friend again.

*****

Atris watched as Meetra walked towards the docking bay, where the ship was waiting to take her off to war, she was surprised to feel a twinge of Jealousy that she was going with out her. The Two had been friends for almost as long as Meetra had been in the order, the council here on Dantooine had actually made sure that the two were trained together since they were so much alike. Now for the second time, Meetra was leaving to go off to a war the Jedi would rather not be involved in. Atris remained where she was standing until the ship lifted off and vanished into the horizon as it left the planet towards the current location of the Republic Navy.

“Fools,” a low gruff voice broke the silence causing Atris to turn to see Master Vrook Lamar watching the vanishing ship. “They will surely fall to the dark side, no good will come of this war.”

“We’ve done what we could do,” Atris replied. “The rest is out of our hands.”

Bowing her head, she walked by the crowd of Padawan’s who had come to watch the ship leave and returned to the Jedi Temple.

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I - The Mandalorian Wars

Chapter Two
Eres

Ravager

Meetra Surik stood alone in front of the large view screens on the Bridge of what had become her flagship, a new Centurion-Class battlecruiser called The Ravager. She could see the entire fleet in front of her, including Revan’s flagship. Like her Ship, Revan’s was also a Centurion-Class battlecruiser, no means the largest ships in the fleet they were the most powerful as far as armor and weapons went. The Bridge sat on top of a command tower that grew larger each level down until it reached the body of the ship. Most of the crew had been veterans of the Republic military, Revan picked the finest and bravest to crew the command ships, leaving the Veteran officers to command the other ships with mostly fresh crews. As Meetra stood motionless, she could sense everyone on the ship and they all were ready to take the fight to the Mandalorians and she knew they would be getting their chance soon. Before arriving to her new command she had met with Revan on his flagship where she had received her orders.

“I am sending you to Eres III,” Revan had said in the briefing. “Intelligence services have discovered the Mandalorians are converging on the planet. They also report that Cassus Fett is leading the fleet.”

“Fett,” The Ravager’s captain Mon Halan had hissed at the mention of his name, the tall Kaminoan had no love for the Mandalorians nor for Fett, Meetra couldn’t help but agree with him, having seen what the man had done in the war. He was as bad as they came, falling short of the mad scientist Demagol, it was Fett who was behind the massacre at Cathar and had been at the head of the Battle of Vanquo and the invasion of Taris.

“We’re still reorganizing the Military,” Admiral Saul Karath had informed her as she looked over the information on her datapad. “So we’re in a Defensive war right now that said it’s not vital we hold Eres III, your mission is to hold off the Mandalorians for as long as you can.”

“Make them think twice,” Revan added, only his voice relaying his serious nature, his face covered in a Mandalorian Mask he had vowed to wear until the War was over. “If we make taking Republic held worlds costly to them they won’t be in such a hurry to continue.”

“A battle of attrition,” Meetra wasn’t a fan of the style of fighting, it’s goal was to inflict as much damage on the enemy as you could with the hope they would run out of men before you did, but until the Forces had been reorganized it would have to be done.

The rest of the meeting was straight forward as they discussed the layout of the fleet, Meetra would be assigned the 2nd fleet which would consist of two Hammerhead-class cruisers, Five blockade runners, roughly 100 tactical strikefighters and a Battalion of soldiers on this mission. Not a large battle group but it would be enough to make someone think twice about attacking. When the meeting had ended she returned to find Arren Kae waiting for her in the Docking Bay, a former Jedi Master she had been Revan’s first teacher until she was thrown out of the order when her affair with the famed Echani General Yusanis came to light among other things she didn’t know about. Arren Kae was an older woman, about 15 years older then her, though the age didn’t show, her nearly silver Blond hair hung down past her shoulders and her ice blue eyes betrayed no emotion as she watched Meetra disembark from the shuttle. Having only seen images of the woman she had always thought she resembled Atris and meeting her in person did little to dispel the feelings.

“Greeting General Surik,” The older woman spoke softly in a warm voice that didn’t match the cold front she presented.

“Master Kae,” Meetra bowed in respect

“Please, I’m not a Jedi any more,” The woman smiled, with a hint of regret passing across her cold features. “You don’t need to treat me as a Master.”

“It was the wrong thing to do,” Meetra muttered as she stood up.

“I broke the rules that have been in place for thousands of years,” she shook her head in disagreement. “I had a child and kept her a secret from the Jedi Council.”

“What brings you to the Ravager?” Meetra decided to change the subject.

“I’ve been assigned to your battle group,” Arren revealed. “So I’m at your service.”

“I welcome your help,” Meetra placed her hand on Arren’s back and led the woman towards the elevator. Coming to a stop, Meetra followed Mon Halan towards the bridge and after a long walk down the command walkway, which was above the crew pit; she came to a stop in front of the large viewport and looked out at the fleet as it orbited the Republic capital of Coruscant with Malak’s flagship, the Centurion, based directly across from the Ravager. Behind Malak’s ship The Dominator sat in the dry docks as crews finished up repairs to fix the damage from where a Mandalorian scout ship had crashed into it. Revan’s Flagship, the Vengeance, hovered over the fleet and filled the top of the viewport. “Move us way from the main fleet.”
Meetra continued to look out at the large fleet in front of her as the Ravager pulled away from its orbit, many of the capital ships were going off on smaller missions like her, no counter offensives yet, and their missions were to keep the Mandalorians from taking any more planets. The Rest of the fleet would wait as Revan consolidated his forces and prepared to strike back.

“We’re ready,” Halan reported from the communication station.

“In three then,” Meetra let out a sigh, feeling the apprehension of her crew through the Force, she cleared her mind and looked over to the pilot station. “Three, two and Jump.”

The Single White stars soon turned into lines as the Ravager jumped into lightspeed and soon Coruscant was light years behind them.

The Jurkadir

The Bridge of the Jurkadir was active as the Mandalorian crew prepared for battle and Cassus Fett couldn’t be happier. The Seasoned Veteran was doing what he was born to do, what all Mandalorians were born to do, soon they would be in orbit above the planet Eres III raining down destruction on weaker beings. Eres III was an unimportant target, mostly a tourist world that billions of lifeforms visited just to see the Xoxin plains. Xoxin was a dangerous substance that was extremely flammable but it did provide stunning sights. Attacking the world would only bolster Fett’s reputation; he was already the most wanted man in the galaxy due to his victory on Cathar and this would only make him more hated.

“My lord,” the voice of the ship’s pilot interrupted his thoughts, had he not been wearing his gold Mandalorian Helmet the pilot would have seen that Fett was quite annoyed to be bothered. “We’ve arrived.”

“Excellent,” Fett stepped over to the viewport to see the planet below, this was the moment he loved the most. The time when the target had no idea their lives were about to be changed, no idea that they were about to strike. “Launch the Basilisk war droid and inform Mandalore that we’ve begun.”

“At once,” The communications officer

“We have incoming,” one of his officers announced.

“Wonderful, this won’t be a waste of time then,” Fett smiled behind the mask as he saw a Frigate and two other ships drop out of lightspeed. “Tell the Adenn to Fire on their location.”

The Ravager

Meetra sat alone in her ready room reading the latest intelligence reports about what she would be facing in battle. Spies had reported that they had seen Fett’s flagship The Jurkadir with the Adenn and The Naast, just one of those ships would be a match for the Ravager but three was too much for her fleet to face alone. She cursed softly as she thought back to the briefing; she had been told a small fleet had been seen heading to Eres, which was just outside of Mandalorian held space.

“General,” Captain Mon Halan’s wispy voice came through the comlink that sat on her desk. “We’re pulling out of lightspeed now.”

“I’ll be right there,” Meetra grabbed her Jedi Robe and slipped it on as she approached the door. As she reached the door controls the whole ship shook sending her falling to the ground.

Racing to the Bridge, she found commotion as the crew raced to battle stations and Mon Halan giving orders as if this was an every day thing. Outside the Viewport she could see the remains of one of her ships; she could also see two others had large sections torn out where they had clearly been hit by what ever it was that had been waiting for them.

“We’ve been hit, The Mandalorians were waiting for us,” Mon Halan explained. “We lost the Frigate Galactius as soon as we came out of Lightspeed. Two dropships were hit pretty badly as well; one is evacuating the ship while the other believes they can survive.”

“What about the Ravager?” Meetra asked, making a note of the scorch marks across the bow of the ship.

“Only minor damage, most of it is shrapnel damage” Halan reported. “The Galactius took the brunt of the attack.”

“Get the fleet in front of the damaged ships,” Meetra ordered, looking out at the Mandalorian Fleet. “And find out where their third capital ship is?”

“You heard her, Fire up those Turbolasers,” Halan followed her orders. “And turn this ship broadside.”

The mighty ship turned around to cover the damaged ships and soon found themselves facing off with a Mandalorian Battleship, that had come out from behind the planet’s moon. Meetra watched as the ship moved into firing position, the second Battleship had left its place next to Fett’s flagship and was also moving into position to attack the fleet.

“Radio the Guardian, they’re to head to the planet to take on the Basilisk’s,” Halan ordered.

“I want a firing solution on the Battleship in front of us at once,” Meetra commanded. “Aim all weapons at this.”

Meetra paused as she approached the weapons stations, and after taking time to glance at the layout of the battleship she pointed at the bridge tower.

“There,” Meetra as she pointed. “Fire all weapons right there now.”

Mon Halan looked out of the viewport just as all of the Ravager’s weapons opened fire on the Mandalorian battleship in front of them, the blasts ripped into the bridge. With the bridge destroyed the battleship began drifting towards Eres III, pulled in by the planet’s gravity, the other two Battleships remained in their positions, likely in awe of their attack then anything else.

“Helmsmen,” Meetra barely paused as she moved from the weapons station to the pilot’s station. “Get that wounded ship in between us and the Mandalorians.”

“Yes, sir,” The pilot quickly moved the Ravager behind the crippled battleship, which now provided cover from the other two battleships.

“What did you do,” Mon Halan came over, his large black eyes focused on the Mandalorian Ship.

“Mandalorians don’t believe in shields,” Meetra explained. “They rely on armor to protect their ships and one of their weak points is the just under the bridge, thankfully the ship was close enough to take advantage.”

The Guardian

Arren Kae waited quietly at the back of the bridge as the ships crew moved the ship into Eres’ orbit; the crew was still experiencing the high from Ravager’s attack on the Mandalorian Battleship that had tried to sneak up on the fleet from behind the moon. If she believed in luck she would have chalked the shot up to that, but she knew the Force was at work here, Meetra surely felt the opening through the force. However, they had more important things to deal with, with the Battleships dealing with The Ravager that left the Basilisk War Droids for them to deal with. The Basilisk droids were intelligent battle droids that the Mandalorians rode like beasts and were used for ground missions as well as Space battles, their heavy armor and weapons made them a threat in both arenas.

“Launch the alert fighters,” The ship’s captain announced. “Ma’ma, we’re ready to launch the drop ships.”

“Very well Captain,” Arren bowed slightly. “May the Force be with you.”

It took a matter of minutes to strap in to the Drop ship, which was full of Soldiers and Jedi who had been sent on this mission, and once she gave the go ahead the small ship left the Cruiser and entered the planet’s atmosphere. Once they cleared the clouds, Arren could see the signs of fighting as the Republic garrison on the planet held off the Mandalorian assault, columns of smoke rose high into the air as the famed Xoxin plains burned. Undoing her straps she made her way to the rear doors and activated the controls and once the ship was close enough to the ground she jumped out, followed by the other Jedi and soldiers. Once on the ground she could see that they were lucky as several other drop ships crashed after being shot down, the lucky ones were able to crash land and allow the uninjured soldiers to disembark the unlucky ones exploded when they hit the ground or as they plummeted to the ground. Activating her Silver lightsaber she wasted no time in charging into the battle.

The Ravager

Meetra braced herself as Fett’s Battleship opened fire, the entire ship shook as the blasts hit the shielding, the Ravager quickly returned fire striking one of the Mandalorian Assault ships at point blank, the impact the explosion had caused another ship to explode in the impact. Meetra knew however it had more to do with luck then the abilities of the shooter. Another blast from the Battleship skimmed the bow of the Ravager sending a shiver through the ship.

“What are they doing?” Halan couldn’t quiet believe that the Battleship was coming closer, firing it’s turbolasers as they came towards them. “Brace for impact!”

The ship was shaking constantly with the blows from the other ship’s weapons, which was also receiving a pounding as it got closer. Meetra knew that the Battleship wouldn’t hit them; the course would take the Battleship under the Ravager which was undefended as all the turbolasers were on the top of the ship. The Mandalorians could cripple the ship if they fired at the ship as they passed under them. “Reverse course and give as much power as we can to the shields, they’re going to pass under us.”

The Ravager ceased firing as the ship fired its reverse thrusters and started moving away from the Battleship who continued to fire as they passed, one of the hits punched through shields and hit the ship causing the whole ship to jerk sending the officers who were unlucky enough to be standing or didn’t have the ability to use the force crashing to the floor.

“Halan,” Meetra reached out and pulled the ship’s captain up to his feet.

“I’m good,” Halan smoothed out his uniform. “Could have been a lot worse, good thinking, you saved a lot of lives”

“Don’t thank me yet,” Meetra looked out the viewport at the remains of the Battleship that they had been using for cover, the remaining Mandalorian Battleships had no qualms about firing through their own ship to attack the Republic. “Damage report.”

“The cruiser Reliant is crippled sir,” The Communications officer replied. “And we’ve lost three of the Blockade Runners.”

“We have several hull breaches in sector 3, all along the bottom decks,” Halan’s second in command, Kaylen Ulgo, reported from the Damage station. “We’ve lost 2 turbolaser batteries, an Ion battery and three of our laser cannon’s.”

“Target the second Battleship,” Halan ordered the remaining batteries to fire on the damaged Battleship that had been hanging back as Fett’s ship charged.

“General,” the scanner operator announced. “I’m getting a new group of contacts.”

“Inform all the ships,” Meetra came over to the scanner to see for herself.

“It’s the Leviathan!” The Communications officer announced, the Leviathan like the Ravager was one of the Republic’s newer ships. An Interdictor-class cruiser, it was smaller then the Ravager but had more firepower then the Cruisers the Ravager had with her. The Cruiser had with it a whole battle group of assault ships, blockade runners, and more, more then enough to even the odds against the Mandalorian fleet.

“Ravager, this is Admiral Saul Karath,” a voice came over the loudspeaker. “Thought you might need a hand?”

“Happy to have you,” Mon Halan replied.

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I - The Mandalorian Wars

The Jurkadir

Unlike normal commanders, Cassus Fett displayed no emotions as the Leviathan’s battle group arrived; this had been what the Mandalorian had wanted all along, a real battle. He couldn’t help but have respect for the commander of the Republic fleet, most of the time; the Republic would go on the defensive before running away when faced with numbers like he had. But this one was different; this commander had charged head first into the fight and had even taken out one of his Battleships. The arrival of this new group only evened the odds a bit more, though they still had the advantage of two battleships against one.

“Commander,” The Communications officer stepped forward. “Mandalore requests that you regroup.”

“Did he say why?” Cassus barely paid attention as his battleship took out another Republic Frigate.

“Only that it’s time to execute our next phase,” the officer replied.

“Very well,” Fett was slightly disappointed to leave a battle he was so clearly winning, but this wasn’t an occupation force and they’ve accomplished what they set out to do. “Inform the fleet, tell them to withdraw.”

“Yes My lord,” The Officer returned to his station to spread the word.

At least we can fight as our forces withdraw, Cassus thought to himself as he watched the battle unfold. The Damaged Adenn had already begun to fall back towards the planet, to keep the Republic Cruiser from getting in the way.

The Ravager

Meetra Surik once again had to help an officer up from the floor as the ship was rocked by another hit; this one took out one of the secondary docking bays. She was still surprised to see the damaged Battleship falling back towards the planet and the Guardian and now the surprise doubled as the lead Battleship began withdrawing from the battle as well. Suddenly the fleet disappeared into lightspeed and back towards the Mandalorian held space but while some might believe this means they won, Meetra wasn’t one of them. She knew as soon as they arrived that this wasn’t an occupation force, it was a just a hit and run to cause as much damage as they could.

“Damage report,” Meetra turned back from the viewport.

“We have damage to over 40 percent of the ship, we’ve lost all of out ion canons and half of out Proton torpedo bays. We’ve also lost a secondary Docking bay and another has been damaged.” Mon Halan replied. “Of our ships we’ve lost more then half of our support ships.”

“General,” The Communications officer stepped forward. “Admiral Karath is requesting permission to come aboard.”

“Granted,” Meetra replied.

Meetra stood silently as the Admiral’s shuttle touched down in the main landing bay, normally most of the ship’s crew would be standing at attention but with the damage that needed attention most of the crew couldn’t leave their posts. As expected two security officers disembarked the shuttle first followed by an officer she hadn’t met but knew as Carth Onasi, and then finally Admiral Karath stepped out into the ship’s deck.

“Welcome aboard,” Meetra bowed at the waist as Mon Halan saluted his commanding officer.

“It’s good to be aboard,” Karath replied.

“Seems the size of the Mandalorian fleet here was underestimated,” Mon Halan commented.

“Vastly underestimated,” Karath agreed.

“Who would have thought they would have sent so many ships to attack Eres III, it’s a resort world,” Carth remarked.
“I’m afraid, they won’t be in the resort business for a while,” Meetra sighed. “The Xoxin plains are on fire can’t say I’m surprised with how flammable the stuff is but it’s going to take years before it can be put out.”

“That will be for people hire then us to deal with,” Karath pulled out a datapad and handed it over to Meetra. “For the moment you’re going to the Shipyards of Duro for repairs, the rest of your battle group will meet you there.”
