Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Batgirl
THE Bird’s flight
Part II

Gotham City
Late-May

Chloe Sullivan had tried her best to go about her business as she found herself listening to Vicki Vale’s report of the Bruce Wayne case. There wasn’t really anything new since the arrest but that didn’t mean people stopped watching. In front of her she had a new article about the masked man who had come to her rescue between Bruce’s arrest, Holiday and this new comer Chloe was in need of a vacation. Deciding against asking for some time off Chloe returned to work only to be interrupted by the delivery of an plain white envelop with her name written in Black across the front of it. Opening it up she found a CD along with a note explaining that the CD contained some info on the Mobster Tony Zucco. The note had been signed by Batgirl which she had found strange, she had no real contact with the Dark Knight’s partner outside of the couple times she’d seen her. Batman must have been to busy, otherwise he would have given it to her by showing up at her place or calling her cell to set up a meeting. Slipping the disc in her purse as she looked to see if anyone was watching her, once she was sure no one was looking her way she put her purse back into the drawer she kept it.

Someone had said the last weeks of the school year were the easiest of the semester, who ever that someone was didn’t have Dr. Max Zeus as their teacher. She didn’t mind her instructor all that much, he was well built and tall, his full head of dark brown hair made him look younger then he really was. There wasn’t a girl at Brentwood who didn’t have a crush on the man and she was no exception. That however didn’t make up for the fact Dr. Zeus was making the class do a report on his favorite topic, Greek Mythology. Each student was given a topic to write about, hers was the Greek goddess Demeter, so while others were taking it easy she was forced to write a 10 page paper on a goddess she barely knew anything about and fulfill her duties as Batgirl.

Later that night Barbra stood behind Alfred as he searched the main computer console in the Batcave for all the info on Tony Zucco and the death of Dick’s parents. Surprisingly there was a lot of evidence tying him to the death. He was seen that day threatening the owner of the Circus, his prints found on the rope and everyone knows Zucco carries a knife with him at all times.

“Is there anything else here?” She leaned over to glance closer to the screen.

“Just what you see here Ms. Gordon,” Alfred smiled. “We can say that it seems clear that Tony Zucco is the person who caused the accident that took Young Grayson’s parents.”

“Then I guess I’ll have to have Richard help out on this,” She wasn’t looking forward to going after a mob boss even one as low as Tony Zucco. “Send this info to Renee Montoya; she’ll know what to do with it.”

“Very well,” Alfred typed in a few commands before sending off the information to Detective Montoya.

Turning her back on Alfred she packed the few gadgets Alfred had given her into the storage pouch on her motorcycle waving towards Alfred she placed the helmet over her head and drove out of the batcave. Alfred’s wish that she be careful went unheard as he turned and headed back up towards the house.

Re: Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Richard Grayson stood outside the Gotham Union as he checked his watch for what seemed like the 5th time in a half hour. He knew Barbra did have to go to school so it might take her awhile to get to him since she never gave a time. She had just told him to be there Tomorrow night. She must be waiting for the old man to head back to the station house, he thought to himself. He wasn’t stupid he knew there were other things to worry about the press were all over The Police and the DA for focusing to much on Bruce Wayne’s supposed connection to the Roman and not enough on the Holiday killings. He knew almost everything there was to know about the latest victim thanks to the media reports showing his grieving family wondering why he was killed when he had no ties to either The Roman or The Boss. For all he knew Tony Zucco could be this Holiday though he doubted it due to the fact from what he knew Zucco didn’t have either the brains or the balls to do something like that. Taking a seat at one of the many tables around the union he elected to watch as people went by while he waited. He never liked waiting and now that he felt his hunt was nearing an end he was almost getting jittery. As he watched the crowd he noticed Barbra from across the street. Wearing an over coat and what appeared to be black pants Richard found it a bit odd that she would dress so warmly on a nice night like tonight. It was hardly cool enough for a jacket much less an overcoat like she was wearing.

“A little warm for the weather,” he took a sip of his soda as Barbra sat across from him keeping her coat buttoned up.

“The Police have all the evidence that says Tony Zucco did it,” Barbra kept her voice low.

“That’s great but I want to take him down myself,” Richard forgot all his questions about her attire.

“I know I’ll regret it but this is Zucco’s last known address,” Barbra slipped a note towards Richard. “Go in do what you have to do, but he has to be alive when the police arrive. Otherwise they go after you and I tell my father who you are and where you can be found.”

“I understand,” Richard looked down at the address. “I really do, I won’t do anything to ruin their case I promise.”

*****

Across the street in an unmarked blue van two men used a long range microphone to listen in on the conversation. Two more men sat in the front seats reading a couple news papers half listening in on the recording. “Fast Freddie” Fredrick Nikolas was the oldest son of Russian immigrants who found work in Zucco’s organization and soon earned his own crew. After the Irish were wiped out by Holiday in November he became noticed by The Roman and took the place of the Irish in The Falcone Family. At the moment he was doing a favor for his first boss. He was growing worried over some punk kid digging up information on him and now he found the kid and his partner.

“Boss it’s me,” Freddie dialed Zucco’s number. “I found the kid, he’s at the Gotham Union, and you’ll never guess who’s helping him out. The Commissioner’s bastard daughter. Yeah that’s right sir Little Barbra Gordon. I must say she sure is a sweet looking thing. Yes sir I understand we’ll do it now.”

“So we take them out,” the second man in the back seat, “The German” George Kohn, a German national as his nickname suggested he had been brought over by The Roman for his marksmanship with any gun that was put in front of him. It was said that The German once killed 10 people with only 9 bullets.

“Yes we have the order,” Freddie answered. “Jessie you start the van and pull up the Union, then you two leap out of the doors the two of us will open up the side door and open fire. You two will keep them from escaping.”

“Even Gordon” Jessie “Naples” Imperioli, the only Italian member of the crew he was one of The Roman’s drivers before becoming a wheel man for Freddie.

“You got a problem with offing a girl senor,” Pablo Morales an illegal alien from Southern Mexico known for his lack of morals which was one of the reasons Freddie chose him to come along. He had joined the Boss Sal Maroni’s family before becoming a member of Freddie’s crew.

“No I have no problem with offing a girl, though it is a shame to waste one such as her,” Jessie looked at the Mexican. “I do have a problem with Police riding my ass from here to judgment day.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Freddie said. “We’ll go on a vacation for a while after we do this no one will know what happened by the time we finish.”

Re: Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Barbra watched as Richard looked at the address she was a little worried about what would happen to either Zucco or Richard. She knew Zucco had several men with him at all times and was well armed. She would hate to see anything happen to him but at the same time if something happened to Zucco and it was Richard’s fault she would hate to see Richard get locked up. Regardless she would never forgive herself if anything happened to Richard. Feeling a need to turn around Barbra just saw a blue van start up and turn around so the side of the van faced the concourse of the Gotham Union. Standing up she mentally kicked herself for allowing someone to get the drop on her, she flipped the table over and pulled Richard down behind the table as she ducked down just as the side door opened and two men opened fire with automatic pistols. As he kept his head down he saw why Barbra had been wearing the coat as she reached into the coat and revealed a yellow utility belt and pulled out a couple batarangs.

“That explains the coat,” Richard grabbed the edge of the coat to reveal her Batgirl costume.

“You going to sit there and get shot or you going to help me,” Barbra grabbed hold of the table leg and started to crawl backwards dragging the heavy ceramic table that had been donated by a former graduate of the university. The bullets chipped away at the tiles as they dragged the table back towards the building. One of the bullets broke threw the table and impacted Barbra in the chest causing her to fall backwards. Richard gabbed her as he ran into the building and set her down behind a pillar as he watched the door way. He could still hear the men shooting so they were still making sure they didn’t escape. Turning back to Barbra he pulled open her coat to reveal that the bullet impacted the body armor under the bright yellow Bat that covered her chest.

“You going to do anything or just sit there,” Richard turned back to the door when the shots stopped.

“I’m good,” Barbra got to her feet and pulled the cowl and gloves out from the coat and tossed it aside. When Richard turned back to her she was placing the mask over her face concealing her face. Grabbing the batarangs she waited until the lead gunmen was in sight before tossing them both at him. The man went down with a groan as both batarangs impacted with his head knocking him out cold. Pulling out a bat shaped shuriken she crouched down as a darker skinned man came in to check on his partner. Catching a glimpse of her in the corner of his eye he brought his weapon to bear on her just as she threw the shuriken at the man’s hand. The man dropped the gun and clutched his hand in pain allowing her to leap out and take him down with a series of kicks to the chest and head. Picking up her weapons she made her way back to the entrance to find two more men standing guard including Fast Freddie. She had read all about him when she was helping Montoya try and take Zucco down if he was here that meant Zucco knew who was after him.

Richard had finished tying up the two men who were unlucky enough to meet Batgirl. Keeping his head down he watched as Batgirl crouched down behind the shot out table that had been their cover until they got inside. The only sounds were the random shots that had slowed down to one or two a minute. It seemed to him that the remaining members of the hit squad were running out of people to shoot at. Picking up one of the guns he made is way to the other side of the door. Aiming the gun he opened fire on the van causing both men to dive for cover. Using the moment of distraction Batgirl leaped up and took out the furthest thug with a stun grenade leaving her to face off with the last man standing.

“Its done,” Batgirl stood in front of Fast Freddie as Richard went to take care of the one Batgirl stunned.

“Says you,’ Freddie replied as he raised his gun at Batgirl. Ducking down Batgirl threw two bat shaped shurikens at Freddie’s gun hand. “Get me one shame on me, get me twice same on you.”

Rotating his gun hand he revealed his padded glove that took the impact of both weapons. With out waiting Batgirl threw a low kick that impacted with Freddie’s groin and drove her other knee into his face knocking him to the ground one hand grabbing for his groin as the other reached for his nose. Standing up she took a look around as she kicked the gun away from the fallen man.

“Guess next time you’ll wear a cup,” Batgirl turned him over and bound his hands together after digging her weapons out of Freddie’s glove before turning to Richard. “You okay?”

“Yeah nothing like almost being killed to get the blood flowing,” Richard surveyed the scene as the sounds of police sirens started to grow closer. “You better get out of here.”

“Be careful, Zucco knows your coming after him now,” Batgirl pulled out a grappling gun and fired it off at one of the nearest buildings and rocketed into the sky.

“He won’t know what hit him,” Richard turned and ran off in the other direction leaving the four gun men laid out for the police to find.

Re: Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Richard found himself, dressed in his costume on the roof of a building overlooking the last known address of Tony Zucco. The place looked dark with all of its lights off so it wasn’t looking good that he was still there. Rather then just leaving he decided to check it out anyway maybe something there would lead him to where Zucco is now. Taking a flying leap he used his skills from the Flying Grayson’s to catch a clothes line and land softly on the roof. Sliding down the Fire escape he entered a back door to find as he had already assumed an empty room. Pulling out a flashlight he began to search the room looking for any signs of life. What he could tell from his search was that the building had been deserted for a short time. It seemed clear that he was running scared or at least worried enough to move to a new location. Not finding anything of use he left the way he came in and retreated into the night air.

From across the street Tony Zucco watched as the masked stranger searched the old building. He had thought of wiring it with explosives but that wouldn’t answer the question on his mind, who was this person and what did he want. All Zucco knew for sure was this person claimed Zucco killed his parents but other then that nothing was said as to what he wanted to do. Was it revenge, a thank you, Justice it could be anything as far as Zucco was concerned. Anyway he couldn’t know for sure how good this person was and it would be a shame to blow up a perfectly good building for nothing.

“You want me to follow him boss,” Artie Baccalieri came up from behind Zucco.

“Get some of the men to follow him,” Zucco turned to face Artie. “But have them keep their distance, we don’t know how good this guy is all we know is that four of out best people tried to kill him and Gordon’s little !@#$ and they ended up beaten and in a Jail cell.”

“Got it Boss,” Artie waved a group of men forward and gave them their orders. Zucco watched the group round the corner where the stranger had gone. Once they were out of site he walked back to the car that was waiting for him and his driver drove off towards The Roman’s penthouse.

*****

It had been over a week since Barbra had seen Richard last, she knew he didn’t find Zucco as he was still out there thought the Roman was royally pissed off over the fact Zucco got four soldiers arrested. Though it wasn’t like she had the time as of late with final exams to finish the week and now at her father’s request a day job to earn a little money and get some Work experience under her belt. She could have told her about her non paying job as Batgirl but she didn’t think that would go over well. Of course having a job did keep her from an empty house most days due to her father’s work load with the Holiday case still unsolved and the absence of Batman causing him to realize just how much he depended on him. He had been informed that Batman was tracing down a lead if he only knew the truth maybe Bruce Wayne wouldn’t be in a jail cell right now. The Press was really riding the DA’s office over the arrest coming up with evidence that Dent appeared to have been blind to including the fact Bruce fought against the Falcone’s spreading their influence not an act of someone in league with The Roman. Thanks to her information Chloe Sullivan was able to bust open several of Falcone’s and Maroni’s activities and Renee was quickly building up a murder case against Zucco. If only she could find him or even talk to Richard.

Barbra finished buttoning up the McBurgers uniform and left the locker room reporting to the front counter. It was looking like another long day but she was getting paid by the hour and the work kept her mind off things that would distract her such as the lack of Batman. She was already noticing a rise in activities during her patrols which could only mean word had been spreading about the fact The Batman hadn’t been seen in weeks. Getter her mind back on work she set about to take the next order.

Seated at the table near the front door of McBurgers, Miguel Chavez slowly ate his fries as he watched the clock. The rest of his gang would be arriving soon and then they would do what Mr. Zucco paid them to do. He didn’t really care why they were hired to take out some !@#$. He was a bit disheartened that their target was so pretty it was a shame to waste such a fine looking girl with out taking her for a ride once or twice. The only question he did have was why Mr. Zucco had hired them to do this when he could have just as easily had his own men do the deed. Reaching under the table he made sure the gun was still where he put it and continued to eat his fries. His long time friend entered as Miguel finished off his fries, Michael Robbins had joined the gang at the same time Miguel did and rose up the ranks quickly as he became the go to guy for firearms which helped out a great deal. There wasn’t a gun he couldn’t get his hands on and for this job he had gathered 5 AK-47’s as well as 5 .45 caliber handguns, chances were good that their target wouldn’t be walking away from this one. Soon after Michael arrived the remaining members of the team arrived all picked by Miguel for the job. Tony Jackson was the newest member of the gang but had proven his worth in several gun fights, Franklin Prince had little to no moral code which made him perfect for this job, while some may be a little hesitant to shot up a room full of people. Mark Johnson was the biggest and strongest person of the team, if anyone tried to over power them Mark would head them off. Giving one more look around Miguel pulled out the AK-47 he was hiding under the table followed by the rest of the group causing the people near them to scatter just before they pulled the triggers.

Barbra first noticed the scatter of people before she focused on the five men carrying automatic rifles, all of whom were coming towards her. She reacted a split second before the men opened fire driving her co workers to the ground as the menu behind them exploded in a shower of shattered glass and tiles. After the longest two minutes of her life there was a break in the shooting as the men reloaded their rifles, taking a look around the counter area was completely destroyed. Grabbing the hands of her co workers at the counter she led them into the back area just as the men opened fire again the bullets turning the door into a pile of wood slivers. The sounds of gun fire stopped as she heard the sounds of footsteps coming into the back of the restaurant. As the others ran towards the freezer for safety Barbra pulled a bag from her locker and his behind the open door as two of the shooters entered the locker area of the restaurant. Pulling a flash grenade from the bag she tossed it through the shot out window toward the three men who seemed to be scanning the group in the eating area. When the grenade went off the two men in the locker room spun towards the door just as Barbra hit a round house kick to the man closer to her in the side of the head., the remaining man tried to train a handgun on her but she disarmed him and delivered a stunning blow to the man’s throat causing him to gasp for air as he fell to the ground. When the police arrived they found the three men in the dinning area blinded from the flash grenade and the two others bound in the locker room. Because no one saw what she had done, she was just another witness telling a tale of bravery rescuing her co workers from the counter and hiding in the locker room where she had heard an explosion followed by a short fight. She had found a hiding place after she bound the two men and waited there until found by the police.

Re: Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Renee Montoya was seated at her desk looking over all the info that had been gathered as ADA Rachel Dawes sat in the chair next to the desk. Normally that chair was where people would be brought to fill out a report, whether it was to report a crime or they had been arrested. At the moment Rachel was reading over the evidence with her so she could fill out a warrant that a judge would sign. With Zucco’s connections it would take a lot of evidence to convince a Judge to go ahead. While she was looking over the evidence Renee looked over Zucco’s history, he had mad his bones 20 years ago during the old Falcone-Bertinelli family war. He then handled a lot of the shipping for the Falcone family before getting his own crew which was sent to end the war once and for all some 8 years ago when Zucco and his crew murdered the Bertinelli family at a wedding, only a 10 year old girl by the name of Helena escaped the slaughter. With the war over Zucco returned to shipping and set up a sex slave operation which was busted earlier this year by her and Batgirl.

Rachel placed the folder she was reading on the desk before standing up and picking up her briefcase. Renee could never tell anyone but she found Rachel attractive and always enjoyed working with her, if only to be near her. The two had become good friends and often had dinners together but Renee didn’t push the mater she knew Rachel was an old childhood sweetheart of Bruce Wayne’s which was causing all shorts of problems for her with Bruce facing Conspiracy charges. To make maters worse she was rumored to be a witness for the defense which could cause some problems with her boss Harvey Dent.

“Well it looks like we have enough to make a case,” Rachel collected her stuff and got ready to leave. “I should have a warrant to you before the end of the day.”

“Thanks Rachel,” Renee smiled slightly. “It will be good to get this creep off the streets once and for all.”

“Hopefully Harvey doesn’t get in the way, his bullheadedness on this Bruce tied to Falcone issue is causing him to lose some sight on other cases.” Rachel commented as Renee walked her to the parking garage under the building.

“Commissioner Gordon is not happy about it either,” Renee thought back to the meeting she had with her boss and friend. He was pretty angry that Harvey was dropping the ball on the Holiday case for some as he put it some Quixote type vendetta. “No offence but he’s using up resources that could be better used to find Holiday.”

“Hopefully this fiasco is over with before the next Holiday,” Rachel opened the driver’s door and slipped into her car. As Renee watched Rachel drove off towards the street. Waiting a moment she check her watch and walked over to where she knew her partner would be. She wanted to be ready as soon as the warrant was issued she could almost feel the victory that had escaped her for so long.

Batgirl stood in front of the large monitor in the Batcave watching as the news reports came in. Vicki Vale sat behind the news desk, her blonde hair tied back. She was wearing her usual navy blue blazer over a white shirt. As she was doing the days wrap up Batgirl thought back a few years about the time she arrived to Gotham City. Vicki had a string of run ins with the law, mostly shoplifting. She always got off after returning the stolen goods and was pretty much barred from most of the major stores in Gotham City. Turning her focus back to the program she waited as Vicki turned to the network’s court reporter Robert Kane. An older looking man he kept his hair short and wore an off the rack gray business suit.

“It was no surprise today that DA Harvey Dent lost his motion to have Billionaire Bruce Wayne kept with out bail. Had this been a capital crime he would have won with out question.” Robert looked into the Camera as they cut to scenes from the days proceedings. As Bruce Wayne was shown leaving the court room with his lawyers he continued. “Mr. Wayne made the 500,000 dollar bond the judge had set and has been ordered to surrender his passport as well as wear a monitoring bracelet to insure he stay in Gotham City. At this time Mr. Wayne has left the Jail cell where he had been staying for the last 2 weeks and is one his way home.”

“Thank you Bob,” Vicki turned to another camera as an image of a shadow with the words Holiday killer across them. “In other news there is still no leads in the Holiday Killings that have gripped the City since Last Halloween when Johnny Viti became this first victim. Since then 25 people have been killed including the last victim killed on Mother’s day. Now let’s turn to our Meteorologist Bill Finger.”

“The News is to depressing these days,” a familiar voice called out from behind her.

“Mr. Wayne?” Batgirl spun around to find Bruce Wayne looking a little disheveled but good. “When did you arrive?”

“A few minutes ago, Alfred told me you would likely be down here,” Bruce walked over to the control council of the cave.

“Does this mean Batman is back?” She approached the chair as Bruce sat down behind the monitors and pulled up the latest on the Holiday murders.

“No, I can’t go out yet,” Bruce replied. “For one thing the Police are tracking me, and if I show up tonight people might connect Batman disappearing when I was arrested and then reappearing when I get out on Bail.”

“I see,” Batgirl’s shoulders sagged as she thought about having to go out alone once again. “That makes sense.”

“I hear you’ve been busy while I’ve been away,” Bruce looked away from the computer. “I’m proud of what you’ve done.”

“Thank you, it’s been tough,” Batgirl fought to keep from smiling.

“It always is, I’ve been doing this by myself for almost 10 years now,” Bruce gave a slight smile. “I understand you made contact with the new guy.”

“Yeah it’s all in the file there,” Batgirl pointed at a manila folder on the desk next to him. “He’s pretty good at what he does but I’m worried about what he’ll do when he finds Zucco.”

“He’ll do what he feels he must,” Bruce flipped through the folder. “But if he kills him he must be brought in.”

“I understand,” Batgirl started to walk towards her motorcycle.

“Good luck out there,” Bruce turned the chair around to face Batgirl as she left.

Re: Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Richard Grayson stood on the roof across from Zucco’s new office; he had ended up following the men Zucco sent to follow him. They weren’t very good at following someone so once they lost him they went back to their car and returned here. However they didn’t lose him, he turned the tables on them and turned them into the hunted as he followed them. Now he could see Zucco sitting behind a large desk covered with paper work and what ever the night’s dinner was. Putting the binoculars on the ledge next to him he pulled out his cell phone and called the number Barbra had given him. If he was going to go in he would need some back up. After two rings Richard heard the familiar voice, he had thought about hearing that voice since the last time he saw her almost a week ago.

“Babs,” Richard could almost see the look on her face in response to what he just called her. “It’s me, Richard. I’ve found Zucco he’s at an Apartment building off Crime Ally, on Linseed Drive.”

“Got it I’ll be right there,” Barbra’s voice was slightly hushed but he couldn’t hear anything else in the background. Hanging up the phone Richard kept his watch on the building and hoped Batgirl could arrive before Zucco decided to leave.

Batgirl turned the motorcycle towards Crime Ally as she used her free hand to call up the phone she gave Renee as a way to get in touch with her. Speeding through the streets she waited five rings before Renee finally answered the phone. She sounded a little out of breath other then that the only sounds she could hear told her she was still at Police One, the central location for the GCPD and where her father worked.

“Detective,” Batgirl took a sharp turn almost throwing her off the bike. “Zucco’s in an Apartment off Crime Ally on Linseed Drive.”

“Got it, The ADA should be back soon with a warrant.” Renee voice couldn’t hide the excitement behind them.

“I’m on my way, I’ll meet you there,” Batgirl shut the phone off as she slowed to a stop in an ally behind the Apartment. Pulling out a grappling hook she fired it up towards the Roof top ledge and used the motors in the gun to pull her up to the roof. Peering up over the edge she could see a lone guard near the door leading into the building. Reaching for her belt she pulled out a new automated batarang that could be programmed to hit a target before being thrown. Picking her target she tossed the Batarang towards the lone man and waited until the sound of a thud before crawling up to the roof to find the guard laid out and the batarang laying next to him. Looking around she found the Red and Black costume of Richard across the street. Waving her hand to get him to see her she watched as he used his circus skills to walk across a wire that he had secured when he arrived.

“Bout time you got here,” Richard slapped Batgirl on the shoulder.

“At least you are as smart as you say you are,” Batgirl took another look around the roof, before kicking Richard in the shin. “Don’t call me Babs.”

“Sure thing sweetness,” Richard grinned as he shook off the pain in his shin. “Shall we go?”

Renee and her Partner Crispus Allen stood near their car as they waited for Rachel to show up with the warrant. Once Batgirl called with the new location she had gathered a team of GCPD’s best to go and bring him and anyone else they happen to catch. Smoking on a cigarette, Renee kept time by tapping her foot she knew Crispus wasn’t a fan of this but she did it anyway.

“You know the smoking I can deal with but I really wish you would stop the tapping,” Crispus turned his head to look at her. “Unless you want me to be an insane when we go and bust this punk ass.”

“I’m just nervous,” Renee tossed the cigarette to the ground and crushed it with her heel. “We’ve been so close so many times I want to get him this time.”

There talk was interrupted when Rachel arrived with the warrant and got into the back seat of their car. With Crispus driving they led 10 cars and a police van towards Crime Ally.

Batgirl led Richard down into the building quietly making there way down the stairs. It was easy to find what floor Zucco was on as two large men stood at the door way to the floor. Deciding to handle this quickly and quietly Batgirl pulled out two bat shaped throwing stars and threw both of them at the two men. With only a groan both men fell to the ground.

“What was that,” Richard whispered as they stopped at the two men.

“It’s a poison, it puts people to sleep for a couple hours and they wake up with a splitting head ache.” Batgirl picked up the weapons and proceeded into the hallway where she took out another guard with an uppercut to the chin. “What room is he in?”

“He’s in the third room from the left,” Richard looked down the hall trying to remember what side of the building.

“We’re on the right side of the building, so he’s down that way,” Batgirl started to walk in the direction. Keeping her senses high she saw the door opening before Richard could react. Pushing him down, she took three bullets to the chest knocking the wind from her as she staggered backwards. Pulling out a batarang she threw it at the gunmen sending him backwards as it connected with his forward. From down the hall another gunman opened fire hitting Batgirl three more times in the chest causing her to fall to the ground. The fabric of her shut was almost all shot away leaving the Kevlar vest exposed. Trying to catch her breath she saw Richard pick up a fallen Batarang and threw it at the man at the end of the hall. Coming to her side Richard tried to pick her up causing her to groan as she clutched the area where the bullets impacted. “Go get Zucco, I’ll be ok.”

Running down the hall Richard ran into two men as they exited Zucco’s room. Using his momentum he crashed into them knocking all three men to hit the ground in a heap. Grabbing both men he slammed their heads into the floor knocking them out cold. Looking up he found Zucco pointing a gun at him.

“So kid, you’re the one who’s been after me,” Zucco waved his gun around.

“You killed my parents,” Richard got to his feet and walked closer to Zucco.

“Then join them,” Zucco calmly pointed the gun at Richard’s Head and pulled the trigger.

Batgirl staggered to her feet and followed down the hall using her hand to brace herself as she walked. Reaching the door she heard Zucco tell Richard to join them. With out pausing she leaped forward just as the gun went off plowing into Richard the bullet pierced her cape and hit the wall behind them. Slowly getting to her feet she saw Zucco running towards the door. Getting to her feet she staggered to the door to see Zucco running towards the stairwell. Leaning against the door jam she saw a red and black blur run by as Richard chased after him. Chasing after the two of them as best she could she made it to the door in time to see both Richard and Zucco heading down to the lobby. With no other choice she jumped from the landing and used her cape to slow her fall enough to land safely on the Lobby landing where she grabbed Zucco by the lapels of his jacket and spun him around and sent him into a table with a crash. Pulling out his gun Batgirl jumped towards a young couple who was standing at the front desk knocking them to the ground before they could be shot. Distracted by Batgirl Zucco never saw Richard deliver a side kick driving his shin into Zucco’s gut doubling him over opening himself to a double fisted blow to the back driving him to the floor where Richard kicked him in the ribs before Zucco grabbed his foot and twisted it causing Richard to spin around and hit the floor.

“You can’t beat me, I’m Tony Zucco,” Zucco wiped the blood from his mouth and nose that came as a result of his face hitting the floor. “Time to die.”

“Freeze, GCPD you’re under arrest Zucco,” Renee led the police as they stormed into the lobby.

“You can’t arrest me,” Zucco turned to the police as they pointed their weapons.

“We have all the evidence we need, your time is up,” Renee stepped forward.

Re: Batgirl: The Bird's Flight Part 2

Standing at the front desk Batgirl watched as Renee went forward reaching for her handcuffs. She couldn’t tell if anyone else had noticed that Zucco’s arm was rising, before she could say anything Zucco fired his gun. When Renee fell to the ground the rest of the officers opened fire. Reaching her side as Crispus checked Zucco, Renee slowly sat up rubbing where the bullet impacted her vest.

“What the hell was he doing,” Renee groaned as she reached her feet.

“I have no idea,” Batgirl looked down at Zucco’s bloody body.

“Who’s this?” Renee turned to Richard who was looking at Zucco’s body in shock.

“With Batman out looking for clues to who Holiday might be I’ve brought in some back up,” Batgirl covered for Richard.

“I’m Robin, Pleased to meet you,” Richard stepped forward and shook Renee’s hand.

“We should get going allow you to straighten this up,” Batgirl started to walk towards the back with Robin behind her. She could feel all the eyes of the Police on her as she left their line of view. Exiting the building in the back Batgirl walked Robin to the Motorcycle. “Robin where’s that from.”

“Its something my Parents always called me when I was younger,” Robin sighed.

“Get on,” Batgirl got on the bike. “There’s someone I want you to meet.”

“Ok,” Robin got on the bike behind her and wrapped his hands around her waist. For the longest time Batgirl said nothing as the bike raced towards the edge of Gotham City before disappearing down into a lone road that went threw a forest before it raced towards a rocky bluff covered with a slight waterfall. Jumping the banks of the river it went through the waterfall and into a long cave before coming out into a large open area. Robin looked around the cave seeing what could only be the Batmobile. On a level above he could see a large bank of computers.

Getting off the bike Batgirl led him up a set of stairs towards the upper level where he saw that not only was there a computer system there was also a lab table covered in evidence from the Holiday murders. At the edge of the floor a makeshift trophy room was set up with numerous things on display. Turning back towards the stair way he could make out an Armory below this level but above the garage level. Hearing the sounds of steps Robin turned to find himself looking at Batman as he came from an upper level.

“Hello Richard,” Batman stopped a few feet in front of him. “Barbra tells me you’ve been an asset.”

“Yes sir,” Robin looked over at Batgirl to find she had pulled the cowl off and was now standing in only her ruined costume. “She also helped me a great deal.”

“Yes with Tony Zucco,” Batman turned and picked up a folder. “I understand the police had to kill him. How is Detective Montoya?”

“She should be ok,” the bullet his the Kevlar vest you invented,” Barbra smiled knowingly.

“I think this will help understand why?” Batman tossed the folder at Robin who caught it before it spilled all over the floor. Reading through it quickly he was shocked at what he found. “He had an inoperable tumor in his brain. He had at most a year left to live.”

“Wow, so this was a suicide,” Robin was dumbfounded but a bit relived he found him when he did. He could at least get some justice before Zucco had died.

“Could be we may never know what he was thinking,” Batman walked over to the computers. “I’ve asked Barbra to bring you here for one reason. These last few weeks have shown me that one man can’t do this alone. I need a team, a team that can bring justice to Gotham City, someone who has been affected by crime. Barbra lost her parents because her father drove drunk and crashed both him and his wife off a bridge.”

“And I had both of my parents murdered by Zucco,” Robin looked over at Barbra who had her head down as Batman brought up her parents deaths.

“Correct,” Batman reached up and removed his mask as well revealing to Robin’s shock that Batman was really Bruce Wayne, no wonder Batman hadn’t been seen. “And I watched as a mugger shot and murdered my parents.”

“I understand,” Robin slipped his mask off as well. “I accept your offer. I’ll join your team.”

The End
