Rome
October 2006

The Emergency room was buzzing with activity as nurses prepared the room for the incoming casualty, they didn’t know much about the victim only what the paramedic had radioed in as they sped to the hospital. They had found a young woman in a puddle of blood at the front of an ally where two more bodies had been found, one of which had his head removed. The sounds of sirens grew louder until the came to a stop followed soon after by a stretcher being wheeled in to the room with an EMT straddling the young woman performing chest compressions. The Woman herself had her shirt cut open to showing the two blood soaked bandages, one covering her lower chest and the other covering the middle of her abdomen.

“What do we have?” the attending Doctor walked in to the room his hands gloved up

“We have two gun shot wounds to the chest and abdomen, through and through, her breathing was shallow and pulse faint when we arrived,” the EMT said as he continued compressions. “She crashed some 5 minutes ago.”

“Stop compressions, charge the paddles to 250” The Doctor checked her over before grabbing the paddles to try and jumpstart the woman’s heart. “Clear!”

The woman’s body jolted as he sent 250 volts through it to try and restart her heart, with no reaction the doctor upped the voltage to 300 and tried again with the same result. Taking a look at the clock he called a halt to the efforts to save this girl and handed the paddles to the nurse.

“Time of Death, 1:05am,” The Doctor pulled off his gloves and left the room for the nurses to clean up. Nearly a half hour after she was brought in a young looking man was bringing the woman down to the morgue in the basement of the hospital. The Nurse at the front desk didn’t recognize the man but he was dressed as an intern at the morgue, so she let him go with out a second thought. The only noticeable thing she could remember later was a strange circle tattoo on the inside of his right wrist.

*****

The room was dark, the only light filtering in was from the street lights outside, The room was almost perfectly clean, only a trail of clothes on the floor leading from the bedroom door, in the center of the room a large king sized bed with the headboard resting against the wall across from a set of patio doors which led out to a 2nd floor balcony over looking the open garden in the center of the complex. The day had ended hours ago and now the owner of the villa was asleep in the bed with his long time girlfriend. He had never been a heavy sleeper, years of living out doors had well engrained the need to keep one eye open incase of danger. So when the sound of the Doorbell followed by someone pounding on the front door rang through the House, he was up and out of bed before he even knew what was happening. Throwing on some clothes he headed down to the front door picking up some of the more embarrassing articles of clothes and tossing them in a pile with other clothes near the laundry room. He found his cell phone under his pants where it must have fallen and saw that he had gotten a number of phone calls in the last hour. Opening the door he saw the agitated face of James Ryder, he had clearly not shaved since the day before and his salt and peppered hair was uncombed and looked as if James had run his hands through it several times.

“Don’t you answer your damn phone?” James pushed by his friend and entered the greeting room of the villa.

“Since when did Watchers have to get in touch with past assignments so badly,” James followed his friend into the kitchen where he preceded to make a pot of coffee. “Besides you’re not my watcher anymore; remember you got that cushy job as head of the Mediterranean region.”

“Cushy, I’m under more stress now then when I was head of the Kyros Project.” James laughed. “You were easy, you didn’t complain about assignments.”

“You don’t get to follow me around the globe,” Kyros pointed a breakfast bar at him. “So I know you didn’t come down here at 2am to complain about your job what do you want?”

“Part of our new directive is to locate any pre immortals and watch out for them, hook them up with a teacher, kind of a way to make sure they aren’t wacked their first month.” James started to explain.

“You know my feelings on this Jim,” a twinge of guilt ran across Kyros’ face, a rare crack in the ancient Immortal’s armor he shows the world, before he turned away. “I’m through with teaching these kids.”

“We think this one will actually stand a chance,” James couldn’t help but remember the look of terror on the face of young Lucy Knight. A woman in her late 20’s who had only suffered her first death a couple years before. Despite Kyros best work Lucy lost her head and Kyros quit teaching, Lucy had just been another in a growing list of Students he had taught that in the end couldn’t hack it. “She was a slayer.”

“A slayer,” Kyros looked back towards James and nearly let out a laugh. “Slayer’s can’t be immortal.”

“Well she is,” James pulled the file from his bag. “And it’s one you found.”

“Faith Lehane,” Kyros read the short bio that the watchers had come up with in their time watching her. Kyros himself had discovered her back in 1998 when he was after Polvinsky. In the time since she had worked for the Mayor of Sunnydale, a fact that disturbed him as that was where he had been going when he encountered the girl. She had then ended up in a coma for several months, the result of a fall off some building after being stabbed. ‘Lucky she didn’t awaken then,’ Kyros thought as he continued skimming across her heading to prison for a number of crimes where she stayed for a couple years before breaking out and disappearing. The report picked back up in Cleveland where she appeared to stay for a while before coming to Rome where she died. Tossing the file back on the counter he looked back at Ryder who was on his 2nd cup of coffee. “So what’s the emergency?”

“The Emergency is, she woke up and is out on the streets full of Immortals with no idea of what she is,” James stated with a serious tone. “And by all accounts powerless.”

It had only taken a few minutes before both Kyros and Cybele were back downstairs ready to go, as they made their way to the door, James’ cell phone went off causing them to stop. The conversation was brief and consisted of mostly one worded replies from James until he hung up.

“So what’s up?” Kyros didn’t have to be 4500 years old to know that was about Faith.

“A watcher saw her checking into a hotel not far from the Hospital,” James wrote down the address and handed it over to his friend. “She should still be there.”

10 hours earlier…

It was a dark night, a new moon, which made things darker then normal and it was the kind of night Faith enjoyed. Vampires and other demons who come out at night always got more bold on nights like this so she was going to be in for a good night. She had barely gotten hands dirty when she heard the sounds of a battle not to far away, her curiosity peeked she made her way over towards the sounds making a mental note of the time. She had a flight at 9am and would either head in early or stay out the 6 hours until dawn and just head back for her bag, with it being 12:30am she was leaning more towards staying out all night. As she approached the beginning of any ally the sound of metal hitting metal came to a stop and was soon followed by an explosion of lightning and the sounds of windows shattering and light bulbs blowing. Once the light show was over Faith slowly walked into the ally, her hand clutching the knife she had been carrying, keeping her highly trained senses alert for any sign of trouble. Near the end of the ally she could see two shapes, one lying on the ground and the other was kneeling over the figure. As she was watching the kneeling figure slowly stood up causing her to stop as she waited to see what happened next. Unexpectedly she saw a brief flash followed by the sound of a gun shot she reacted quickly but not quick enough as she felt the hot stabbing pain rip through her chest. Coughing up blood she knew at once she had been shot and that her lung had collapsed as a result, struggling to remain standing she dropped the knife and staggered back towards the street. She couldn’t be sure but it appeared as if it had grown darker as she stumbled causing her to fall into the wall sending pain through her body. Looking back at the shooter she saw that he had bent down and picked up the knife before continuing towards her. Unable to move she could only lean against the wall as the man came close enough to where she could see him.

“I’m sorry,” he replied. “But you’ll thank me.”

Suddenly she head another shot and felt the bullet hit her in the gut driving what little air she had left in her remaining lung out in a gasp. She stayed focused on his face as she slid down the wall all feeling leaving her legs the sounds of distant sirens growing louder until she passed out.

Now…

With a jolt Faith awoke covered in sweat as she sat up in the lumpy bed she had fallen asleep on. She was unaccustomed to feeling powerless and scared but she was feeling both now, getting out of the bed she walked over to the window and looked out at the restaurant across the street. She was unable to shake the image of her shooter’s face from her head as she ran a hand over the location of the final shot. She had no idea what had happened, she had woken up on a slab covered in a sheet and thankfully the young man who had rescued her from the morgue had supplied her some clothes along with some cash, she felt a bit bad about knocking him out, especially after realizing he wasn’t all that surprised that she was alive in one of the coolers and that he had everything she would need. The part that disturbed her the most was the fact she had none of the powers she had grown so used to in the nearly 10 years she had been a slayer. Buffy had died twice that she knew of and both times had come back with her powers, why didn’t she. Part of her was a little jealous that her rival got to be even more special then she already was. She had hopped to get some rest by using the money to rent the room but she found nothing but the questions that had plagued her since she woke up. Turning back towards the room she looked over at the TV which had been running some local morning news show which meant she didn’t understand anything they were saying but she knew they were talking about her murder by the unflattering sketch of her they were showing on the screen. Having enough she left the room and headed across the street to the restaurant to get something to eat, maybe getting some food in her would help her think. As she approached though she could feel a growing buzz in the back of her head, taking a seat she quickly asked for a cup of coffee and something to eat.

“Not a very flattering drawing,” She heard a male voice from next to her, with a slight unknown accent. “But then she had been covered in blood and pale when they saw her so it likely wasn’t her best look.”

“Can I help you?” Faith was a bit on edge, she didn’t expect anyone to talk to her in English, much less bring up the sketch.

“Nope,” The man folded the paper, he had a narrow face with medium length, dark brown hair and green eyes that appeared to pierce through her but betrayed the look of an older man who had seen too much. “But I can help you Ms. Lehane.”

“How do you know me,” She looked around to see if there was anyone else around who might be a threat.

“We’ve met before,” the man leaned towards her. “Back in 1998, you were running from something.”

“I’m afraid that year is a bit of a blur,” Faith confessed as she remembered back, 1998 was the year she was chosen to be the slayer, her watcher, Diana Dormer, had taken her in seeing the potential to be the next slayer. But an ancient Vampire named Kakistos brought her world crashing down by killing the only person she ever saw as a mother, right in front of her, while his goons held her preventing her from stopping him. Fighting her way out of his trap she fled Boston and went west eventually reaching Sunnydale, the home of the almost mythical Buffy Summers. Buffy had died at the hands of another ancient Vampire called The Master but had been revived and unknown to her and her friends another Slayer had been called as a result. Teaming with Buffy she had been able to kill Kakistos and ended up helping battle the Vampires until she accidently killed a man which sent her to the Dark side as Andrew would say. Joining the Mayor, who had pretty much sold his soul to the Devil to become a pure demon, as strange as it was he had become a father figure for her and she did what ever he needed before ending up in a coma for nearly a year which was soon followed by Prison and eventually in Rome. “The last few years have been pretty busy.”

“I’m sure,” the man nodded knowingly. “I assure you it wasn’t much of a meeting, I was heading east you were heading west and we crossed paths.”

“So what do you want?” Faith drank from the cup of coffee that had been brought to her.

“Mainly, I want to help,” he replied. “I’m sure you felt that buzzing sensation as you came over here?”

“How did you know?” Faith couldn’t hide her shock.

“We’re the same,” he leaned over to whisper into her ear. “We both have a hard time dying.”

“Do you know what happened to me?” Faith turned to look at the stranger all doubts she had remaining had vanished.

“Let’s go somewhere a little more private where we can talk freely,” the man stood up and tossed some Italian money on the tables.

“Who are you?” she followed suit and stood up as well.

“I’ve been known by many names,” he placed his hand on the small of her back to lead her down the street. “But you may call me Kyros.”

He led her down the street towards a black sports car that she was sure was worth more then everyone she had known made in a year combined, she hesitated a bit but got into the front passenger seat and watched the road as he drove through the morning traffic. As he drove he told her that she was immortal, that as long as she kept her head she could never die and she would never age, he went on telling her of other immortals and of the game. A never ending battle between immortals that has gone on for millennium in which the victor would not only remove his opponents head but would receive the Quickening, the life force of the fallen immortal which passed on all his knowledge and skills to the winner. As he continued she found it hard to focus as her head was spinning with all this information she didn’t even notice that he had stopped driving and pulled into the drive way of a large two story villa clearly designed to resemble the villas of ancient Rome.

“You live here?” Faith was astonished

“I own it,” Kyros laughed and led her up to the doors. “This is where you’ll be staying if you would like, while we help you understand and get you ready to defend yourself.

“Who else is here?” Faith could feel the growing buzz of another immortal.

“At the moment just my partner, Cybele,” Kyros opened the door allowing her to see what she could only call a lobby. Faith could see a door straight ahead of her which went off to someplace bright judging by the light. To her right another door that had been open revealing a kitchen and to her left another door, however this one was closed so she couldn’t see where it led. Along both walls leading up from the doors was a curved staircase leading up to yet another door on the second floor and above her a crystal chandelier hung over the room. A series of Frescos lined the walls retelling some ancient battle and finally looking down at the floor it was made of a black and white marble. “And Lindsey, but she isn’t one of us. I guess you could call her my daughter."

Re: Highlander Episode 1.1: Enter Faith

As she stood there a beautiful woman dressed in white appeared at the top of curved staircase her skin was a light bronze and her long flowing black hair was tied in a pony tale. She walked down the right staircase with a smile on her face as she approached them. “Welcome, Faith.”

“You know me?” Faith was still trying to recover from the shock of her first glance of the building.

“Of course we’ve been expecting you since we learned of you,” Cybele acknowledged softly.

“Cybele here will show you around,” Kyros said as he stepped towards the closed the doors. “But first on the right is the kitchen, up the stairs is the living quarters and on the left is my office. That’s where you’ll likely find me most of the time it’s not off limits so feel free to come in when ever you want. Straight through those doors you’ll find hallways that lead into the dinning room on the right and locker room on the left if you keep going straight you’ll come out into the gardens. Taking her by the arm Cybele led Faith towards the open doorway leading her down the hall towards a large open Garden that filled center of the Villa and right in the middle a stone water fountain made the entire place sound like running water. To the right she saw a wall of windows that looked out on the garden for anyone in the dinning room to see. Above her she could see balconies looking out over the center, some with tables and chairs allowing for people to sit and enjoy the weather. Off to the left a set of doors which she learned led to a locker room set up with lockers, showers, and a sauna. Across the Garden she saw another set of windows looking in on the gym which had a weight room, pool and an area to spar in. Cybele eventually led her through the garden towards the gym to show her the set up.

Watching until Cybele led Faith towards the gardens Kyros turned and went to his office where a tall man with short blond hair dressed as a Cardinal for the church was waiting. The fact he was there was not surprising, he had called him on the way to find Faith. “Hello Giovanni, admiring the swords?”

“You have an interesting collection here,” The blond haired man looked up from the swords in the center of the room. “One of those belonged to Caesar I believe?”

“Yes, the gold one,” Kyros walked behind his desk towards the back of the room. “So lets have it.”

“Yes, best get this over with, I’m needed at the Vatican,” Giovanni reached into his robes and pulled out a folder. The Cardinal was also a member of an immortal intelligence network that supplied information to other members. It had been a brainchild of Kyros and a couple other immortals after the fall of the Roman Empire and had only grown in size after the advent of Phones and Computers. Once Kyros learned that Faith had been killed near dead immortal he had requested all the information they could gather on the Immortal behind the killer. “His name is Hans Owen, arrived in Rome two days ago in which he ranked up two kills, well three if you count the girl.”

“Anyone we know?” Kyros was skimming through the info he had been handed.

“No,” Giovanni replied. “Peter Schiffer was barely 200 and appeared to be hunting so no ties to the city, he was most likely just passing through and last nights victim, Andre Rollins, wasn’t much older. He appeared to be Owen’s target all along; reports are sketchy at the moment but the two have been circling for a while.”

“Thanks,” Kyros placed the folder into the file cabinet.

“Oh by the way,” Giovanni turned back towards Kyros, his face had grown more serious, before leaving the room. “I thought you should know, Caleb was spotted in Athens.”

“Thanks,” a worried look crossed his face when he heard the news but quickly pushed it aside and followed Giovanni out the office just in time to see Cybele and Faith exit the doors at the top of the steps.

“That’s everything,” Cybele commented as the two woman headed down the steps, before noticing the familiar robes of Giovanni as he headed out the front doors. “Cardinal Giovanni was here?”

“Yeah, he had some information that I wanted,” Kyros turned towards Faith. “So will you be staying?”

“Sounds like fun,” Faith was still on a bit of a high but she could see the difference in Cybele’s mood, her face grew hard and cold as the color faded. “Something going on?”

“Nothing you need to worry about,” Cybele forced a smile, she had known Kyros well enough to know that he heard something about Caleb.

“It’s an old acquaintance of Cybele,” Kyros confirmed.

“A thorn really,” Cybele corrected, the deranged immortal had been hunting her since she bested him in 1881 but took pity on him. Looking back she regretted not taking his head then and there.

“Come on lets get something to eat,” Kyros draped his arms around both woman’s shoulders and led them towards the kitchen. “We have much to discuss.”

The End…
