Re: Star Wars 7

From Disney:
J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

"To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Hmm, this sounds interesting. Can't see bringing back Luke and Leia though.. I'm hoping for new characters maybe.

At this point they would be supporting characters with a new generation taking over the lead

Of course they will bring back Luke and Leia. They have to. I want new characters too! When the original series came out, the characters were mostly unknowns except for the actors that played Obi-Wan Kenobi and Grand Moff Tarkin. I hope DIsney will keep that in mind when making the new trilogy, so we don't get Lindsay Lohan and any of the Kardashian garbage infecting the new series. Luke can be the Obiwanish old and wise jedi. Han can die heroically at some point in the new trilogy, Leia can be something unexpected and I predict she will have some more envolved plot with the new series. And of course Chewie and the droids will come back again. Yay!!

Disney won't have a lot of say in the casting as that will still be LucasFilm but they should have the big three to pass the series off to the next generation. Had the series been filmed in order that's what would have happened, we would have had Yoda and Obi Wan return from the "first three" to hand off the series to Luke, Leia and Han.

So far I've heard nothing of Lando. Is there any chance of him returning?

What about others? R2, C3PO and Chewie obviously, but... Ackbar? Fett survived?

Billy Dee is open for a return so we may see Lando.

I would also suspect R2-D2 and C3P0 to appear as well.

There is a campaign to bring Peter Mayhew back to play Chewie as well.

As for Ackbar and Fett who knows, as far as Lucas was concerned Fett died in Return of the Jedi, despite having a pretty good run in the EU post Return of the Jedi.

I'm pretty sure we will see at least the big three in at least limited roles, though I hope they will have more extensive roles. Keeping fingers crossed.

Plus if they are bringing back Luke, Han and Leia, then I expect to at least see a guest appearance from Lando. He was always sort of a secondary character, but I do hope they bring back everyone that is still alive that played in the original trilogy in some form or another. I'd like to see Warwick Davis play some character in the new films.

not sure they can bring back everyone who is still alive, its a pet peeve of mine when pleasing the fans becomes detrimental to the plot

What about EU characters? Do you think they'll bring in some like Solo kids to hold some total canon?
