(Myers was later sentenced to one year and one day in prison.) Four employees and a customer were shot to death at a U.S. Bank branch in Norfolk, Neb., during a botched robbery. (Four suspects were later arrested; three were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death while a fourth man who served as a lookout was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences.) A state-run Senegalese ferry capsized in the Atlantic, killing more than 1,800 people.

Five years ago: A judge in Los Angeles declared a mistrial in Phil Spector's murder trial because the jury was deadlocked 10-2 in favor of convicting the music producer of killing actress Lana Clarkson. (Spector was convicted in a 2009 retrial.) Myanmar began a violent crackdown on protests, beating and dragging away dozens of monks.

One year ago: Ending weeks of political brinkmanship, Congress advanced legislation to avoid a partial government shutdown. President Barack Obama appeared at a town hall meeting in Mountain View, Calif., hosted by the social networking company LinkedIn; the president plugged his jobs agenda in fielding questions on the employment picture, education, Medicare and Social Security.

Pakistani forces killed Amjad Hussain Farooqi (AHM'-jed hoo-SAYN' fuh-ROO-kee), a suspected top al-Qaida operative wanted for his alleged role in the 2002 kidnapping and beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Israel assassinated Izz Eldine Subhi Sheik Khalil, a Palestinian militant from Hamas, with a car bomb in Damascus, Syria.

Five years ago: Film director Roman Polanski was arrested by Swiss police on an international warrant as he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award from a film festival. (Polanski had fled the U.S. in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Polanski spent two months in a Swiss jail and served seven months of house arrest before Switzerland's government decided against extraditing him to the United States.) Pope Benedict XVI began a three-day pilgrimage to the Czech Republic.

One year ago: It was revealed that some workers at the National Security Agency had misused the government's secret surveillance systems at least 12 times over the previous decade, including instances where they spied on spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends, according to embarrassing new details disclosed by the agency's inspector general. The U.S. and its international partners emerged from a U.N. meeting with Iran declaring a "window of opportunity" had opened to peacefully settle their nuclear standoff. (England was sentenced to three years in prison; she ended up serving half that time.) International weapons inspectors backed by Protestant and Catholic clergymen announced the Irish Republican Army's full disarmament.

Five years ago: Gloria Stuart, the 1930s Hollywood beauty who later became the oldest Academy Award acting nominee as the spunky survivor in "Titanic," died in Los Angeles at age 100.

One year ago: Fire broke out in the basement of a suburban Chicago air traffic control center, temporarily halting operations at O'Hare and Midway airports; an FAA contract employee, Brian Howard, was accused of cutting cables and setting the fire before slashing his throat. In 2012 - George Strait announced that he was retiring from touring at the end of this Cowboy Rides Away Tour. The tour ended in Arlington, TX, on June 7, 2014.
