Today is Tuesday, July 8, the 189th day of 2014. There are 176 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:
On July 8, 1889, The Wall Street Journal was first published. (Price of a copy: two cents.)

Ten years ago: Adelphia Communications Corp. founder John Rigas and his son Timothy were convicted in New York of looting the cable company and deceiving investors. (John Rigas was sentenced to 12 years in prison; Timothy Rigas, 17.) A Swedish appeals court threw out a life prison sentence for the convicted killer of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, ruling that Mijailo Mijailovic (mee-EYE'-loh mee-EYE'-luh-vich) should receive treatment for his "significant psychiatric problems." (The Swedish Supreme Court later overturned the ruling and gave Mijailovic life in prison; in a 2011 newspaper interview, Mijailovic said he had faked mental illness during his trial in an attempt to get a less severe sentence.)

Five years ago: Group of Eight leaders, including President Barack Obama, pledged to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 as they met in L'Aquila, Italy. South Korea blamed North Korea for cyberattacks targeting its websites as well as those in the U.S.

One year ago: Breaking their public silence, three women who'd been held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade issued a YouTube video; in it, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight thanked the public for the encouragement and financial support allowing them to restart their lives.

Today's Birthdays: Singer Steve Lawrence is 79. Actor Jeffrey Tambor is 70. Ballerina Cynthia Gregory is 68. Actress Kim Darby is 67. Children's performer Raffi is 66. Actress Anjelica Huston is 63. Violent protests erupted in Oakland, California, after a Los Angeles jury convicted a white former transit officer, Johannes Mehserle (yoh-HAH'-nes MEZ'-ur-lee), of involuntary manslaughter (instead of murder) in the videotaped fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, Oscar Grant. During an ESPN prime-time special, basketball free agent LeBron James announced he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat. Today is Friday, July 8, the 190th day of 2016. There are 176 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:
On July 8, 1947, an object crashed onto a ranch in Roswell, N.M.; a local newspaper, the Roswell Daily Record, reported that the nearby U.S. Army Air Field had recovered a "flying saucer," but officials said it was actually a weather balloon. To this day, however, there are those who believe what fell to Earth was an alien spaceship that carried extra-terrestrial beings.

Ten years ago: Four more U.S. soldiers were charged with rape and murder and a fifth with dereliction of duty in the rape-slaying of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the killings of her family in Mahmoudiya (mahk-moo-DEE'-ah). (The soldiers received sentences ranging from five to 110 years based on their acknowledged roles in the attack.) Discovery astronauts Piers Sellers and Michael Fossum went on a 7-1/2-hour spacewalk to test a repair technique for space shuttles. Amelie Mauresmo beat Justine Henin (EH'-nen)-Hardenne, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon to win her second Grand Slam championship. Actress June Allyson died in Ojai (OH'-hy), Calif., at age 88.

Five years ago: Former first lady Betty Ford died in Rancho Mirage, Calif., at age 93. Atlantis thundered into orbit on a cargo run that would close out the three-decade U.S. space shuttle program. Ohio State vacated its wins from the 2010 football season, including its share of the Big Ten championship and a victory over Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, as it responded to the NCAA's investigation of a memorabilia-for-cash scandal.

One year ago: On a rough day for tech, a "router issue" at United Airlines suspended all of the company's flights for nearly two hours, leading to 800 flight delays and 60 cancellations; a "technical problem" at the New York Stock Exchange halted trading; and the Wall Street Journal's website, [sign in to see URL], had "technical difficulties." (Government officials said it did not appear that the incidents were related, or the result of sabotage.) Medicare said it planned to pay doctors to counsel patients about end-of-life care, the same idea that sparked accusations of "death panels" and fanned a political furor around President Barack Obama's health care law.

Today's Birthdays — July 8: Singer Steve Lawrence is 81. Actor Jeffrey Tambor is 72. Ballerina Cynthia Gregory is 70. Actress Kim Darby is 69. Actress Jonelle Allen is 68. Children's performer Raffi is 68. Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck is 67. Actress Anjelica Huston is 65. Writer Anna Quindlen is 64. Actor Kevin Bacon is 58. Actor Robert Knepper is 57. Ten states (Nebraska, Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota and Wyoming) sued the federal government over rules requiring public schools to allow transgender students to use restrooms conforming to their gender identity, joining a dozen other states in the latest fight over LGBT rights. Re: July 8th Happy Birthday Kevin Bacon, Michael Weatherly, Milo Ventimiglia, and Sophia Bush

Today is Sunday, July 8, the 189th day of 2018. There are 176 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:
On July 8, 1776, Col. John Nixon gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, outside the State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia.

10 years ago in 2008: A bipartisan group chaired by former secretaries of state James Baker III and Warren Christopher released a study saying the next time the president goes to war Congress should be consulted and vote on whether it agrees. A well-organized assault by gunmen on horseback on a United Nations-African Union patrol in Darfur left seven peacekeepers dead and 22 wounded.

5 years ago in 2013: Breaking their public silence, three women who'd been held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade issued a YouTube video; in it, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight thanked the public for the encouragement and financial support allowing them to restart their lives.

1 year ago in 2017: At the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, world powers lined up against President Donald Trump on climate change, reaffirming their support for international efforts to fight global warming. On trade, the U.S. and international partners endorsed open markets while acknowledging that countries had a right to put up barriers to block unfair practices. After their first face-to-face meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he thought Trump believed his denials of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential vote.
