On May 8, 1911, legendary blues guitarist/singer/songwriter Robert Johnson was born in Hazelhurst, Miss. He died at the age of 27 in Greenwood, Miss. His landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937 display a combination of singing, guitar skills and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first induction ceremony, in 1986, as an early influence on rock and roll. In 2003, David Fricke ranked Johnson fifth in Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”

On May 8, 1945, President Harry S. Truman announced on radio that Nazi Germany's forces had surrendered, and that "the flags of freedom fly all over Europe."

On May 8, 1970, The album “Let It Be” by The Beatles was released.

On May 8, 1978, David R. Berkowitz pleaded guilty in a Brooklyn courtroom to murder, attempted murder and assault in connection with the "Son of Sam" shootings that claimed six lives and terrified New Yorkers. (Berkowitz was sentenced to six consecutive life prison terms.)

A coal mine in western Siberia was rocked by the first of two methane explosions that claimed the lives of 90 miners. Eurozone leaders approved a $145 billion loan to aid Greece to prevent worsening of its financial situation. Andor Lilienthal, 99, the last surviving member of the 27 original grandmasters of chess players, died in Budapest. Actress Betty White hosted NBC's "Saturday Night Live" as the result of a Facebook campaign.

7 years ago in 2011: Relations between Egypt's Muslims and Christians reached a new low after overnight riots left 12 people dead and a church burned. A senior al-Qaida suspect being moved from his Baghdad cell for questioning grabbed a jailer's gun and set off a 6-hour battle that left at least 14 people dead, including the inmate. Fox television announced that Paula Abdul would be one of the judges on "The X Factor," reuniting her with former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell (however, Abdul's stint did not last beyond the premiere season of the new talent show). Lionel Rose, the first Australian indigenous boxer to win a world title, dies in Victoria, aged 62. His state funeral is held at Melbourne's Festival Hall eight days later.

Richard Lugar lost a bitter Republican primary challenge, his nearly four-decade career in the Senate ended by tea party-backed state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who was defeated the following November by Democrat Joe Donnelly. North Carolina voters decided overwhelmingly to strengthen their state's gay marriage ban. Children's book author Maurice Sendak, 83, died in Danbury, Conn. Former U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, 90, died in Skillman, N.J. Josh Hamilton became the 16th player to hit four home runs in a game, carrying the Texas Rangers to a 10-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Claire Lomas becomes the first person to complete a marathon in a bionic ReWalk suit, crossing the finish line of the London Marathon after 16 days.

Veteran actress, director and producer Nancy Malone, 79, died in Duarte, Calif.

3 years ago in 2015: President Barack Obama visited Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., where he made a pitch for a Trans-Pacific agreement that would open up commerce among the U.S. and 11 other Pacific Rim countries.
