Austrian Josef Fritzl, 73, confesses to imprisoning his daughter for 24 years in a windowless cell with a soundproofed door and fathering seven children. He also tells investigators that he tossed the body of one of the children in an incinerator when the infant died after birth.

It was 9 years ago in 2009: U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, winding up his fifth term as a Republican stalwart, announced he would seek re-election in 2010 as a Democrat, switching parties because he found himself "increasingly at odds" with the Republican Party. Three Albanian immigrant brothers were sentenced to life in prison for their part in a plot to attack soldiers at Fort Dix. Pope Benedict XVI embraces survivors of Italy’s deadly earthquake as he walks through their muddy tent camp and demands “serious soul-searching” from those responsible for the shoddy construction blamed for many of the 296 deaths.

8 years ago in 2010: Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was worse than officials had believed, and that the federal government was offering to help industry giant BP contain the slick threatening the U.S. shoreline. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown committed a gaffe during his country's short election campaign when an open microphone caught him slamming a voter he'd been trying to win over. (Brown personally apologized to Gillian Duffy for calling her a "bigoted woman" over the issue of immigration.)

7 years ago in 2011: President Barack Obama reshuffled his national security team, with CIA Director Leon Panetta succeeding Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus replacing Panetta at the CIA. United Nations Security Council Resolution 1980 relating to Ivorian crisis is adopted. The moderate Palestinian president plays down concerns that his emerging alliance with the militant Hamas will undermine peace negotiations with Israel, insisting that he will retain control over foreign policy and remain committed to resolving the conflict. Convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and raping a California girl, Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted in 1991 at the age of 11 and rescued 18 years later. (Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years to life in prison; Nancy Garrido was sentenced to 36 years to life in prison.)
