Leslie Nielsen

Maybe best known for his roles in Airplane and The Naked Gun series, Leslie Nielsen made millions of people laugh in his lifetime, a life that came to a sudden end Sunday at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia.

Born February 11, 1926, it was his uncle Jean Hersholt, prominent silent-film actor, who inspired him to become an actor. His father Ingvard was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he also had two brothers, the oldest named Erik was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada in the 80's. He would join the Royal Canadian Air Force after high school but missed out on fighting in World War 2 due to his age. After working as a disc jockey for a short time he went to the Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto and got a scholarship for the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. After studying at the Actors Studio he appeared on TV for the first time, it was an episode of Studio One, alongside Charlton Heston in 1948.

It wasn't until 1956 he made his film debut with The Vagabond King, while the film wasn't a hit it brought him fame as he was discovered by producer Nicholas Nayfack who gave him a role in his second film, Forbidden Planet, which led to him signing a long-term contract with MGM. He would go on to appear in Ransom! (1956), The Opposite Sex (1956) and Hot Summer Night (1957) before getting the lead role opposite to Debbie Reynolds in Tammy and the Bachelor. He would leave MGM, after trying to get the role of Messala in Ben-Hur, to seek new roles. First as Francis Marion in Disney's miniseries The Swamp Fox and in the end would appear in over 100 films and 1,500 television programs playing over 220 characters, including The Wild Wild West, Hawaii Five-0 and The Virginian.

Despite being best known for comedy his comedic career really didn't break out until 1980's Airplane!, which led to his staring role in 1982's Police Squad! A Role that led to three films, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult. He would even play a similar character for the WWE in 1994.

He died in his sleep at 5:30pm local time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida surounded by his family and close friends.

He is serious but don't call him Shirley
