Highlander remake news

From Total Sci-Fi Online

Fast and Furious' Lin and Mortiz to reboot Highlander

A year after they acquired the remake rights to the Highlander franchise from Davis-Panzer Productions, Summit Entertainment have assigned Justin Lin as director and Neal H. Moritz as producer alongside Peter Davis on their new version of the original movie.

Iron Man's Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have produced a script which focuses on immortal Scots swordsman Connor MacLeod, who confronts a murderous barbarian after a fabled prize. This will form a third variant of the franchise, which has already spawned five movies, two connected live action TV series and a separate cartoon incarnation.

No start date has been set for production yet, and director Lin is now searching for a cast. The original film starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown, with Adrian Paul leading the TV series and the later movies.

They can't make another Highlander... cause there can be only one! emoticon

Oh well, Highlander has been messed up so many times that one more isn't the end of the world.

I once again wonder why the hell do they have to do remakes of great movies, that've been already done as well as they can be.

I can see reasons to make a remake, the film is a little dated and a remake can mean sequels done right.

But I would like a new original Highlander over a Remake. Base a film off the great Highlander Animated film Highlander: The Search for Vengeance.

Summit Entertainment, along with Davis-Panzer Productions, plan to bring you the next generation of HIGHLANDER in the summer of 2012. The filmmaking team behind this past spring’s hit film FAST & FURIOUS – director Justin Lin and producer Neal H. Moritz – along with the rest of the HIGHLANDER team are looking to start production in the first quarter of 2011.

You know what I'd like to see? A TV series with no regular character, with every episode a separate story set in various ages, telling a story of one immortal, sometimes to the end and sometimes not.

Actually there's plenty of franchises that could do with that sort of anthology series.

I hope the new movie will truly an opening, designed to be first of a series of films.

An anthology series could be fun, but wouldn't last long term, it would need a regular character to be built around. Doesn't need to be an Immortal though, a watcher could do just fine.

The producers have stated that they hope this will be the first in a new trilogy. But the leaked first draft had a pretty final ending as well as a lot of things fans didn't like. But it was almost over a year ago that the leaked first draft so I'm sure many things have been changed.

Highlander has become one of the most coveted jobs in Hollywood. Justin Lin was forced to drop out as the director to do the fast tracked sixth Fast and the Furious film and the latest Terminator installment.

The New Director for the film is Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who was most recently linked to the reboot of The Crow, which has stalled out, and is best known for the films Intacto and 28 Weeks Later. He has the film Intruders staring Clive Owen and Daniel Bruhl coming out next. The Iron Man team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the script that was very well liked and polished by Twilight Saga scribe Melissa Rosenberg.

Lin will remain as an executive producer with Neal Moritz and Peter Davis.
