Self-help author James Arthur Ray was sentenced to two years in prison for leading an Arizona sweat lodge ceremony that was supposed to offer spiritual enlightenment but instead resulted in three deaths. Syria agreed in principle to allow dozens of Arab observers into the country to oversee a peace plan.

On Nov. 19, 1928, Walt Disney's first sound-synchronized animated cartoon, "Steamboat Willie" starring Mickey Mouse, premiered in New York. Walt Disney provided the voice of his soon-to-be-famous creation. Steamboat Willie was the first fully synchronized sound cartoon produced. The beloved character's birthday is regularly celebrated at Disneyland and Disney World.

On Nov.. 18, 1978, U.S. Rep. Leo J. Ryan, D-Calif., and four others were killed in Jonestown, Guyana, by members of the Peoples Temple, led by the Rev. Jim Jones. The killings were followed by a night of mass murder and suicide by more than 900 cult members. It was the worst tragedy of its kind in modern history. Also murdered along with Ryan at the Port Kaituma airstrip in Jonestown were NBC correspondent Don Harris, NBC soundman Bob Brown, newspaper photographer Greg Robinson and Temple defector Patty Parks. Jackie Speier, who was Ryan's aide, was shot and survived the airport ambush. Speier was elected to the U.S. House in 2008 in Ryan's district.

On Nov. 19, 1985, the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes," created by Bill Watterson, was first published. (The strip ran for 10 years.)
